California has turned 67 acres of former farmland in Salinas into a restored floodplain with wetlands and grasslands at Ensen Community Park.
Big Sur Land Trust developed the project in partnership with the City of Salinas, reshaping more than 172,000 cubic yards of soil and planting over 6,000 native plants, 100 trees and 2,000 pounds of seed.
The restored area includes 29 acres of wetland, 1.7 miles of public trails and three bridges totalling 240 feet in length.
The redesigned waterways will slow storm flows, help recharge groundwater and filter water moving towards Monterey Bay, while the habitat will support migrating birds and native frogs.
The site will be transferred to the City of Salinas and open to the public with a grand opening event on September 20, giving the community outdoor access while restoring native habitats.
