The National Highways Authority of India has opened a ₹21-crore vehicular underpass on NH 48 at Kadaneri village near Pallikonda toll plaza in Vellore for public use.
The underpass, which is 5.5 metres high and 20 metres wide, was the last of five identified accident-prone black spots on the Vellore stretch to be addressed.
NHAI officials said it will help pedestrians, mostly dairy farmers, cross the highway safely, and ambulances can use it to reach victims faster.
In total, 13 black spots exist between Walajah toll gate in Ranipet and Krishnagiri, and the 148-km stretch now has over 20 such underpasses.
