A professor at Tumkur University's arts college, Sripad Kulakarni, was cheated of Rs 1.32 lakh through a malicious APK file sent to his mobile phone.
On September 9, an APK file named 'Courier Activation' arrived on his phone and appeared as a car RC book when clicked.
The accused took Rs 5 through PhonePe as an 'SRS Service Charge', and money was then deducted from his account even without any OTP being shared.
On September 13, the fraudsters transferred a total of Rs 1,32,042 in three stages, and later callers asked for bank transaction details claiming to refund the money, an offer Sripad did not respond to.
Sripad has filed a complaint at the Hosa Badavane police station seeking action against the accused and refund of the deducted money, and a case has been registered.
