The Karnataka government has filed an appeal with the Cauvery Water Management Authority seeking a reduction in the water release order to Tamil Nadu from 6,000 cusecs per day to 3,000 cusecs.
The appeal cites low water levels in four Cauvery basin dams, which held only 55.389 TMC of water as of September 15, about 52.97 per cent of total storage capacity.
Inflow into the four dams between June 1 and September 15 was 111 TMC, less than half the 30-year average of 228.108 TMC for the same period.
Inflow collapsed from 26,930 cusecs on August 27 to around 3,000 cusecs by September 15, and the India Meteorological Department has forecast below-normal rainfall in the Cauvery basin till mid-October.
The CWMA's decision on the appeal matters because it determines how much Cauvery water Tamil Nadu receives during a year of sharply low inflows for Karnataka.
