Women harvesters around Wular Lake, about 60 km north of Srinagar, report a better water chestnut crop this season than last year.
They and officials attribute the improvement to favourable weather, including good winter snowfall and adequate rainfall that kept the lake's water levels optimal.
The lake yields an estimated 4-5 tonnes of water chestnuts annually and supports more than 30,000 families in over 35 villages, with women doing much of the harvesting and processing work.
Better harvests mean higher earnings for households that rely on fishing and chestnut collection as their primary income.
