- She was a third-year B.Tech (Electronics & Communications) student at IIT Guwahati, where she had enrolled in 2024.
- According to her father, she and three friends visited the river near the campus to watch it in spate; she and another friend entered the water, slipped, and while the friend was rescued, Sai Chetana was swept away.
- Her body was later retrieved from the river, and her father, a tahsildar, travelled to Guwahati to receive it.
