A tanker carrying the highly inflammable chemical 2-Methyl-2-propanol overturned on the Mumbai-Goa highway at Pugaon village near Kolad in Raigad on Tuesday, leaking from its top manhole area.
The leak was noticed around 5 am while the tanker was heading from JNPA towards Mahad, and traffic was completely blocked during the response.
Police, highway safety patrol and local volunteers, with expert help, carried out a four-hour operation that included lifting the tanker with a crane, spraying it with water as a cooling exercise, and stopping the leak.
The administration has declared the area a 'No Mobile Zone' because exposure to the chemical can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation and central nervous system depression.
