New eel species described from Arabian Sea, named after CMFRI

Scientists at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute have described a new species of conger eel from the deep waters of the Arabian Sea.
The species has been named Ariosoma cmfriense after the institute, marking its 80th anniversary year.
The specimen was collected from waters off Kollam in Keralam at a depth of about 300 m in January 2026.
Researchers confirmed the species as distinct using morphological characteristics and molecular evidence, separating it from the 12 Ariosoma species already reported from Indian and neighbouring waters.
The discovery, led by Principal Scientist Rekha J. Nair, adds to knowledge of deep-sea life under the Deep Ocean Mission of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
