- India's Ministry of Home Affairs has notified that Phase 2 of Census 2027, the population enumeration exercise, will begin on August 17 in snow-bound areas of Ladakh, J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with actual enumeration there from September 1 to 30 after a self-enumeration window from August 17 to 30.
- For the first time since 1931, the Census will record caste, declared by respondents without any document or certificate required, and it will also collect the date and place of birth of parents to help determine how many people meet citizenship criteria.
- The questionnaire will also log passport details where available and Aadhaar numbers on a voluntary basis.
- Officials say the Census Act bars use of the data as legal evidence, for government benefits or public disclosure.
