Government increases passport issuance fees to cover rising operational costs

The Indian government has raised passport issuance fees, with the normal 36-page passport fee going up from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 and the tatkal (urgent) fee from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000.
The fee for a 60-page passport is now Rs 3,500, while the fee for minors has increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,750.
Answering a question in Parliament, the government said the revision is needed to cover rising costs of passport booklets, data printing, service providers, police verification, postal and courier charges, and infrastructure.
The increase also reflects the higher cost of chip-based e-passport booklets being produced by the India Security Press.
