The US Department of Labor's watchdog is intensifying its investigation into fraud in the H-1B visa programme, using whistleblower tips and site inspections.
Inspector General Anthony D'Esposito said a surge of tips from people who worked with suspected 'visa mills' is feeding work with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
The probe covers alleged fraud in H-1B and PERM programmes, including fraudulent applications, wage-related kickbacks, labour brokers and potential human trafficking, and extends beyond technology to healthcare and other sectors.
During an August visit to Dallas, investigators found several offices at a property linked to more than 500 approved H-1B petitions appearing inactive, with locked doors and lights switched off.
The findings are part of an ongoing investigation rather than a final determination of wrongdoing, and the crackdown adds uncertainty for companies that rely on foreign-worker programmes.
