Hyderabad cyber crime police have named the head of Google India as a co-accused in three separate cyber fraud cases where complainants were cheated of amounts ranging from ₹7.42 lakh to ₹24.37 lakh through fake trading and investment apps.
The victims alleged they trusted these apps because they were available on the Google Play Store, and blamed Google for failing to moderate content despite having review mechanisms.
Police have registered cases under the IT Act and BNS against the fraudsters and the Google India head, and are issuing a notice to Google India seeking information about these apps, with the possibility of asking for their removal if suspicious content is found.
Google is reportedly reviewing the matter.
