Heavy monsoon rains across Karnataka are pushing large inflows into major reservoirs, with KRS at 103.40 feet, Almatti recording around 1.4 lakh cusecs of inflow, and Hemavati also rising steadily.
The Tungabhadra reservoir holds about 50 TMC against its 105 TMC capacity, and the government is preparing to release water for farming.
However, the Tungabhadra left bank canal has collapsed near Mailapura village in Karatagi taluk, and farmers from Koppal and Raichur districts, recalling last year's breach near Basapura, are protesting against irrigation officials.
They are demanding the canal be repaired before any water is released, warning that releasing water without repairs could breach the canal and cause extensive crop damage.
