Volatile silver bullion prices — swinging from ₹3.18 lakh to ₹4.05 lakh a kg in January, then falling to ₹2.30 lakh by June — have hurt Salem's silver anklet industry.
Over 1,000 manufacturing units in the district employ more than 50,000 workers directly and indirectly, but orders have dropped over the last six months, with many workers now getting work only two to three days a week or shifting to other jobs.
Small and medium manufacturers, including family-run units, are the worst hit, and demand has also fallen at retail outlets.
A manufacturer added that changing trends, such as schools asking girl students not to wear anklets, have sharply reduced demand in recent years.
