Coal India Limited has offered power plants with fuel supply agreements extra coal beyond their annual contract quantities, as critically low stocks were reported at 57 thermal power stations.
Data from the Central Electricity Authority showed total stock at plants was 27.1 MT, only 47% of the recommended 57.7 MT.
The coal ministry said the situation should improve as heavy rains over coal mining regions ease, with CIL's daily production rising from 1.4 MT to nearly 1.7 MT by Sept 4.
The ministry also noted CIL supplied 6.7% more coal during April-August than the same period last year and holds a pithead stock cushion of 76 MT.
