The government told the Lok Sabha that onion prices in Maharashtra, the country's biggest onion-growing state, ranged between ₹900 and ₹1,150 per 100 kg during March to May 2026, well below farmers' estimated production costs of ₹1,800-₹2,200 per 100 kg.
Farmer associations are demanding procurement at ₹3,000 per 100 kg or compensation to cover the gap, but onions have no minimum support price.
The government pointed to the Market Intervention Scheme, which requires a state request and loss-sharing, and to the Price Stabilisation Fund, under which it procured 287,000 tonnes in 2025-26 with a 200,000-tonne target for 2026-27.
It also said no export restrictions have been in place since April 1, 2025, with exports rising to 1.55 million tonnes in 2025-26 from 1.15 million tonnes the previous year.
