The BMC is planning a revised policy under which agencies that dig up Mumbai roads will themselves have to restore the excavated stretches, instead of the civic body doing it as at present.
The policy will rationalise reinstatement charges and make it mandatory for agencies to lay utility ducts if a trench exceeds 50 metres.
Officials say repeated trenching for underground utility work is a major reason for poor road conditions, and ducts beneath roads could reduce trenching by 70-80%, though not all utilities can be placed in ducts.
Currently less than half of Mumbai's roads have utility ducts, and the BMC eventually wants ducts on all roads.
