Heavy rain lashed Chitradurga town and other parts of the district on Monday, with rain boosting agricultural activity in rural areas.
In the town, however, the municipality was unprepared: the drainage system failed, manholes overflowed and sewage flowed onto roads near the city office itself, at Gandhi Circle, the santhe hond area, and low bridges on the Medehalli railway line and the old national highway.
Traffic on Thuruvenoor Road was jammed for over an hour as hundreds of vehicles, including school vans and ore-laden lorries, got stuck, delaying children's journey home, while one traffic policeman struggled to manage the jam.
Residents said sewage even entered several homes in Kelagote, and complained that municipality staff, including the commissioner, did not respond to their calls for help.
