Heavy silt carried into the Pazhassi dam by intense rain and landslips in the catchment made the raw water too muddy to treat, forcing the Kerala Water Authority to suspend treatment at the Pazhassi plant on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The problem is high turbidity — turbidity at the plant measured around 125 NTU against the below-50 NTU level needed for efficient treatment — not contamination.
The plant supplies about 30 million litres a day to Kannur town and nearby areas including Valapattanam and Chirakkal, where supply has been reduced.
Officials are testing water quality hourly, will resume pumping once turbidity falls, and have asked consumers to use stored water judiciously until then.
