India's Power Ministry has proposed mandatory energy consumption and sustainability norms for all new large commercial, residential, and office buildings with a built-up area of 20,000 square metres or more, drafted in consultation with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
Buildings account for roughly a third of India's electricity consumption — 33.5 per cent in FY25 — and demand is expected to grow significantly over the next 10-15 years with urbanisation and rising cooling needs.
The norms would apply only to new buildings whose construction begins after the notification is published, would recognise existing rating systems like GRIHA, IGBC, LEED and GEM, and would require rating agencies to register with BEE.
Stakeholders can submit feedback on the draft until August 10, 2026.
