A Northwest Karnataka Road Transport Corporation bus travelling from Hubballi to Attigeri lost its headlights near Sanshi in Kundagol taluk around 8 pm due to a technical fault.
With passengers unable to disembark midway, they switched on their mobile phone torches to light the way.
The driver then drove slowly, using this light to cover roughly 15-20 kilometres, taking an hour and a half instead of the usual 15-20 minutes, and dropped everyone safely at their villages.
The incident has reignited public anger over old buses operating in rural areas.
