Official data from Pakistan's Bureau of Statistics shows that more than a quarter of Pakistani families now face some level of food insecurity, with the share of moderately to severely food-insecure households rising from 15.92% in 2019 to 24.35% in 2025, while severe food insecurity more than doubled to 5.04%.
Families across rural and urban areas are cutting back on wheat, rice, meat, milk and even tea, cooking smaller meals and reducing variety as food prices climb.
Despite being an agriculture-based economy, Pakistan has been a net food importer since at least 2021.
