A section of a reinforced earth retaining wall, about 12 metres long, collapsed at an under-construction six-lane stretch of the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) near Nippani in Karnataka on July 29.
NHAI attributed the collapse to continuous heavy rainfall causing water seepage through the sub-grade, which led to erosion.
Traffic was not disrupted as vehicles had already been diverted to the adjoining service road, and restoration work has begun.
NHAI has suspended three officials — the Project Director, Bridge Engineer and Resident Engineer — and issued show-cause notices to the contractor and the concerned engineer.
