A Group of Ministers in Andhra Pradesh will examine a proposal to phase out bulk cargo handling, such as coal and minerals, from Visakhapatnam Port and shift it to the upcoming Mulapeta Port.
The government says the move would cut air pollution in Visakhapatnam, ease the port's cargo burden, improve vessel turnaround times and make Mulapeta commercially viable from day one.
The Visakhapatnam Port Authority has proposed taking a 49% to 50% stake in the Mulapeta Port SPV and getting four berths in two phases.
The ministers are to work out partnership modalities and submit recommendations to the government.
