Students at Ramjas College, University of Delhi, have developed a plant-based leather alternative called 'Sahar' made from banana peels, after a year of experimentation.
They tested peels from several fruits, including orange, mango, pineapple and coconut, before settling on banana.
The material is processed with natural binding techniques into a strong, flexible sheet that closely resembles real leather and can be used for bags, wallets, diary covers and fashion accessories.
The initiative aims to reduce dependence on animal skin while also addressing food waste and pollution.
